Best New England Christmas Towns to Visit in 2026

The best New England Christmas towns are the ones with a real festival weekend behind the decorations: Kennebunkport, Woodstock, Stockbridge, Nantucket, Newport, Mystic, Portsmouth, Camden, Ogunquit and Stowe. Most of their big events land on the first two weekends of December, so choosing your weekend matters as much as choosing your town.
I plan a lot of December getaways, and the same thing happens every year. People pick a town, then find out its big weekend already happened, or every inn within 20 minutes is sold out. This guide is built to stop that from happening to you.
For each town I've included the 2026 festival dates, what the weekend actually feels like, a practical tip or two, and where I'd stay. If you'd rather hand the planning off, I can put together your trip for you.
Updated November 1, 2026. Festival dates come from each town's official event pages or local press. Schedules can shift, so I link to the source for each one. Check it before you book anything non-refundable.
New England Christmas Festivals by Weekend (2026)
The first weekend of December (Dec 4–6) is the busiest, with five of these festivals at once. Mid-December (Dec 11–13) is the best weekend for a road trip along the coast.

1. Kennebunkport, Maine: Christmas Prelude

2026 dates: December 3–13 (source)
This is the one people picture when they think of a New England Christmas town. Christmas Prelude turns 45 this year and runs for 11 days across Dock Square, the Lower Village and Cape Porpoise. Look for the lobster-trap Christmas tree, then stay for the caroling and the shops lit up along the harbor.
My tip: Go the second weekend. The Dock Square tree lighting is Friday, December 11 at 5:30 pm, and fireworks over the cove follow at 6:15 pm (source). That Friday, from 3:30 to 7:00 pm, no cars can get in or out between Cooper's Corner and Dock Square (source). Check in early or stay within walking distance.
Where I'd stay: White Barn Inn or Cape Arundel Inn for a splurge, or the Kennebunkport Inn if you want to walk out the door into Dock Square.
2. Woodstock, Vermont: Wassail Weekend

2026 dates: December 11–13 (source)
Woodstock looks like a Christmas card, and Wassail Weekend is when it acts like one. The Saturday parade is the main event: horses and riders in costume circle the village green twice (source). Around it you'll find a makers' market, luminaries on the green and holiday music in the shops.
My tip: Spend a morning at Billings Farm. It celebrates Wassail with an 1890s-style holiday and horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides when the weather allows (source).
Where I'd stay: Woodstock Inn & Resort. It's right on the green and the easiest base for the parade. Twin Farms in nearby Barnard is the all-out luxury option.
3. Stockbridge, Massachusetts: Main Street at Christmas

2026 dates: Friday, December 4 – Sunday, December 6 (source)
Norman Rockwell painted Stockbridge's Main Street at Christmas in 1967, and the town still restages it. On Sunday, Main Street closes to modern traffic and vintage cars park where they sit in the painting. On Saturday night, carolers sing from the porch of the Red Lion Inn (source).
My tip: See the original painting at the Norman Rockwell Museum before you walk Main Street. It's just outside town, and seeing it first makes the Sunday reenactment more fun.
Where I'd stay: The Red Lion Inn. It's in the painting, and you'll be right where the caroling happens. Blantyre in Lenox, about 15 minutes away, is the luxury pick.
4. Nantucket, Massachusetts: Christmas Stroll

2026 dates: December 4–6, as part of Nantucket Noel (November 1 – December 31) (source)
The Stroll started in 1973 to get islanders shopping locally (source). Today, Main Street is lined with small decorated trees, and the cobblestones are packed all weekend. The Nantucket Historical Association's Festival of Trees runs December 4–31 at the Whaling Museum (source).
My tip: Book your ferry and your room as early as you can, and have a backup plan. December wind can cancel boats, so I'd plan to arrive Thursday, or keep a flight from Boston as a backup. When you get there, pick up the printed Stroll program at the Chamber, Zero Main Street, second floor.
Where I'd stay: The Nantucket Hotel is open year-round and hosts its own Stroll weekend events. Plenty of island hotels close for the season by December, so the choice is smaller than in summer.
5. Newport, Rhode Island: Holidays at the Newport Mansions

2026 dates: November 21 – January 3 (source)
Newport is the most elegant pick on this list, and you don't have to aim for one weekend. The Breakers and Marble House are decorated and open daily, and Chateau-sur-Mer opens on weekends. Special events include a musical retelling of A Christmas Carol at The Breakers on December 17 and a Holiday Dinner Dance on December 19.
My tip: Kick off the season early with the Newport Illuminated Boat Parade on November 27 (source). The mansions close on Christmas Day, so don't plan your visit for then.
Where I'd stay: Castle Hill Inn, out on the water, or The Vanderbilt in town if you want to walk to dinner.
6. Mystic, Connecticut: Lantern Lights at Mystic Seaport

2026 dates: December 3–6, 10–13 and 17–23, 2:00–8:30 pm (source)
Mystic Seaport's holiday program, now called Lantern Lights: A Mystic Holiday, lights up the museum's historic waterfront village after dark. It has the most dates of anything on this list, so it's a good fit if your weekend is already set and you need a Christmas town that's running on it.
My tip: Buy tickets ahead and plan for dusk. The lanterns look best once it's dark, which is before 4:30 pm in December. Then walk across the drawbridge into downtown Mystic for dinner.
Where I'd stay: Whaler's Inn, right by the drawbridge, or the Spicer Mansion for a quieter, more romantic stay.
7. Portsmouth, New Hampshire: Candlelight Stroll

2026 dates: December 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 (source)
Strawbery Banke Museum's Candlelight Stroll is in its 46th year. You walk candlelit lanes through historic homes dressed for the holidays, with costumed role players, carolers and fife-and-drum music. On the museum's rink, vintage-style skaters perform twice each evening, weather permitting (source).
My tip: Entry is by timed arrival: Fridays at 6 pm, Saturdays at 4:30 or 5:30 pm, and Sundays at 2 or 3 pm. Nonmember tickets are $35 for adults and $17.50 for ages 3–17. There's no on-site parking, so park downtown and walk, or take the trolley on Saturday and Sunday.
Where I'd stay: Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, a grand 1874 hotel about 10 minutes from downtown.
8. Camden, Maine: Christmas by the Sea

2026 dates: December 4–6 (40th year) (source)
Camden is the quieter Maine choice, with a working harbor and mountains behind the town. The weekend usually starts with a Friday evening parade down Main Street and the tree lighting at Harbor Park (source). Santa comes in by lobster boat.
My tip: Look up after dark. The star on the Mount Battie tower is traditionally lit from Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve, and you can see it from all over town (source).
Where I'd stay: Camden Harbour Inn for harbor views and one of the best dinners on the coast, or 16 Bay View if you want to walk downtown. Check winter opening dates when you book.
9. Ogunquit, Maine: Christmas by the Sea

2026 dates: December 11–13 (40th year) (source)
Ogunquit packs a lot into one weekend: tree and bridge lightings, a parade, a bonfire, fireworks, concerts and craft fairs. Travel + Leisure has named it one of the 25 best Christmas towns in the U.S. three years in a row (source).
My tip: Pair it with Kennebunkport. Both run that same weekend and are only about 20 minutes apart, so you get two festivals from one hotel.
Where I'd stay: The Cliff House in Cape Neddick for ocean views and a spa, or the Beachmere Inn to walk into the village. Rooms sell out quickly for this weekend.
10. Stowe, Vermont: A Traditional Christmas in Stowe

2026 dates: December 4–6 (source)
Stowe is the best pick on this list for snow. Inland and higher up, it's far likelier to be white than the coast. The village festival brings Santa, holiday music, skating and a winter market to Main Street. Then you can ski or snowshoe the rest of the trip.
My tip: For a later December trip, check the Spruce Peak Lights Festival date. It ran on December 20 last year (source), but the 2026 date isn't posted yet.
Where I'd stay: The Lodge at Spruce Peak if you're skiing, Topnotch for a spa weekend, or Trapp Family Lodge for full Sound of Music charm.
How to Combine Towns into One Trip
These towns are close enough to pair, as long as their festival weekends line up. These are the combinations I suggest most:
Southern Maine and Seacoast weekend (Dec 11–13): Ogunquit's Christmas by the Sea, Kennebunkport's second Prelude weekend and Portsmouth's Candlelight Stroll. Stay in one place; all three are within 30–40 minutes of each other.
Coastal Christmas (any December weekend): Newport's mansions plus Mystic's Lantern Lights, about an hour apart. Neither depends on one specific weekend, so this is the easiest pair to fit around your schedule.
Vermont village and snow (Dec 4–6 or Dec 11–13): Stowe's festival the first weekend, or Woodstock's Wassail the second. The two towns are about 1.5 hours apart, so add a night if you want both.
Berkshires slow weekend (Dec 4–6): Stockbridge's Main Street at Christmas, with the Norman Rockwell Museum and a night in Lenox.
Practical Tips for a New England Christmas Trip
Book now for the first two weekends of December. The good inns in festival towns are small, and many fill months ahead.
Read the cancellation policy before you book. Holiday-weekend rates are often non-refundable or require a deposit, and December weather can change your plans.
Don't expect snow on the coast. Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut coastal towns are often cold and gray, not white. If snow matters, choose Stowe or Woodstock.
Plan for early sunsets. It gets dark around 4:15 pm in December, which is ideal for lights but leaves less daylight for driving. Try to arrive before dark.
Expect festival-weekend closures and parking problems. Kennebunkport closes its center to cars on the Friday of its second weekend, and Strawbery Banke has no on-site parking during the Stroll.
Leave weather room for islands. For Nantucket, build in a buffer day and keep a flight option ready.
One more reason to book through an advisor: booking with me has the potential to unlock perks like these: daily breakfast, a hotel credit, or an upgrade when available. I don't charge a planning fee for hotel-only bookings.
FAQ: New England Christmas Towns
What is the most Christmassy town in New England?
Kennebunkport, Maine, is the usual answer. Its Christmas Prelude runs 11 days, with a lobster-trap tree, a Dock Square tree lighting and fireworks. If you want the full Christmas-card look, Woodstock, Vermont, and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, are just as strong.
When is the best time to visit New England for Christmas?
The first two weekends of December. In 2026, that means December 4–6 and December 11–13. Most of the major festivals happen on one of those two weekends.
Which New England Christmas town is best for snow?
Stowe, Vermont. Inland mountain towns in Vermont and New Hampshire are much likelier to have snow in early December than coastal towns.
Which New England Christmas towns are best for couples?
Woodstock, Camden and Newport are my top picks for couples. Each has walkable streets, excellent inns and dinners worth dressing up for, without the biggest crowds.
Which New England Christmas towns are best for families?
Kennebunkport and Ogunquit both have parades, fireworks and Santa sightings. Mystic is also easy with kids, since its holiday program runs on many dates.
Can I visit more than one Christmas town in a weekend?
Yes. Ogunquit, Kennebunkport and Portsmouth are within about 40 minutes of each other. All three have events the weekend of December 11–13, 2026.
How far ahead should I book a New England Christmas getaway?
As soon as you know your dates. For the first two weekends of December, small inns in festival towns can fill months ahead, especially in Nantucket, Kennebunkport and Ogunquit.
