The color formula that makes a fall capsule work

A fall capsule wardrobe works when every top goes with every bottom. The easiest way I've found to get there is to stick to one family of colors.

  • Brown: trousers, loafers, belts and cord.

  • Tan: jackets, the Harrington especially.

  • Olive: pants and outerwear, the color that keeps it from looking like all one shade.

  • Cream: knits and tees, the light layer that brightens everything.

Denim counts as a neutral, so dark and light washes slot right in. One accent goes a long way. A deep red knit or a bandana is enough.

The best men's fall jackets

The jacket does most of the work in a fall outfit, so this is where I'd spend first. I look for collars, canvas and corduroy, in tan, brown or denim.

1. The tan Harrington

The J.Crew Harrington jacket in cotton twill in Commander Khaki is the jacket I reach for most. It zips up, sits at the waist, and works over a graphic tee or a knit. For a lower price, Abercrombie's cotton Harrington has a slightly roomier fit.

2. A plaid zip jacket

Plaid is the fastest way to look like you dressed for fall. The Abercrombie wool-blend zip jacket in light brown plaid goes with brown pants, jeans, and every cream knit below.

3. The barn jacket

The J.Crew 1986 Barn Jacket has the classic cord collar and gets better the more you wear it. It's the jacket I'd buy if I could only buy one.

Also on my list: a J.Crew corduroy jacket with a wool-blend lining, a flannel-lined J.Crew denim jacket for colder days, and the PacSun George canvas work jacket if you're on a budget.

Where I wear them: the Harrington for city weekends and dinners, the barn jacket for foliage trips, and the denim jacket for casual weekends at home.

Men's fall sweaters and knits

Texture is what makes a simple outfit look intentional. A plain crewneck disappears; a waffle or marled knit gives the outfit something to look at.

1. A cream waffle knit

The Abercrombie cotton waffle roll-neck crew is the cream layer under my tan jacket. It's cotton, so you can wear it from early October on.

2. Marled cashmere in a coffee brown

The J.Crew marled cashmere crewneck in Heather Roasted Coffee is the most affordable real cashmere I found from these stores. It goes with every brown and olive pant here.

3. One pattern sweater

One patterned sweater is enough. The J.Crew Fair Isle V-neck in Heather Cacao looks great over a white tee with brown trousers.

Also on my list: an Abercrombie merino collared sweater, a rugby sweater polo, and a patchwork cable cardigan for when you want one statement piece.

Where I wear them: the waffle knit on travel days because it doesn't wrinkle in a bag, the cashmere for dinners, and the Fair Isle for anything with a fireplace.

Fall shirts, overshirts and tees

This is the layer under the jacket, and sometimes it is the jacket.

1. A corduroy shirt

The J.Crew fine-wale corduroy shirt in Dark Roast Olive is the easiest fall upgrade I know. Wear it buttoned, or open over a tee. For less, Old Navy's loose-fit corduroy shirt gets you most of the way there.

2. A heavy plaid workshirt

The J.Crew Wallace & Barnes plaid workshirt is heavy enough to wear as a jacket in September and as a shirt in December.

3. A vintage graphic tee

A vintage-style graphic tee under a plaid jacket is my favorite casual outfit. The Abercrombie Ford heavyweight tee is the one I'd start with, and the plain heavyweight tee holds its shape under any jacket.

Where I wear them: the corduroy and plaid shirts on road trips upstate, where they double as a light jacket, and graphic tees for errands, flights and casual weekends.

Relaxed pants and denim for fall

Skinny pants are out. A relaxed or pleated leg in brown or olive is what makes these outfits look current.

1. Pleated baggy trousers

The Abercrombie pleated baggy trouser is what I wear with the tan jacket. Pleats give it drape, so it looks dressed up even with sneakers.

2. A workwear pant in brown

The Abercrombie relaxed workwear pant is canvas with a little stretch. It's the brown pant I wear with graphic tees and clogs.

3. Dark baggy jeans

One pair of dark denim covers half your week. The Abercrombie baggy jean in dark rinse is the most versatile pair here. For a lighter wash on a budget, try the PacSun Dylan baggy jeans.

Also on my list: an Abercrombie corduroy baggy trouser, an olive loose fatigue pant, and the J.Crew giant-fit chino. Reviewers say the chino runs a little big.

Where I wear them: pleated trousers for city trips and dinners, workwear pants for anything outdoors, and dark jeans for everything in between.

Men's fall shoes

For fall shoes, go with suede. It looks warmer than leather and goes with brown, olive and denim alike.

1. Brown suede loafers

The J.Crew Camden suede loafers in Coffee have rubber soles, so you can walk all day in them. Abercrombie's suede loafer in tan is the lower-priced option.

2. Chelsea boots

Suede Chelsea boots dress up jeans with zero effort. Get them in black leather if you wear a lot of light-wash denim.

3. The suede clog

The Birkenstock Boston in taupe suede with wool socks and wide jeans is the most comfortable outfit in this whole post.

Where I wear them: loafers for city walking and dinners, Chelsea boots for rainy days and travel days, and clogs for road trips and cabin weekends.

Accessories that finish the outfit

A corduroy trucker cap, a brown leather belt and a rib beanie for when it gets cold cover most of it. For something extra, tie a printed neckerchief under an open denim jacket.

What to wear on a fall trip: outfits by destination

Planning fall trips is my day job, and "what do I pack?" is the question I get most. The same closet adjusts to almost any fall trip, but each one needs a slightly different mix.

Fall foliage weekend (Hudson Valley, the Berkshires, Vermont)

Peak color usually lands in early to mid-October, and you're outside most of the day. Mornings start in the 40s and afternoons warm up, so dress in layers.

  • Wear: barn jacket, coffee cashmere crew, corduroy shirt, olive fatigue pants.

  • Shoes: leather Chelsea boots or hiker boots. Orchard paths and trailheads get muddy.

  • Pack: a beanie for the evenings.

  • Tip: skip the suede shoes for apple picking. Wet grass ruins suede fast.

City weekend (New York, Boston, Montreal)

You'll walk 15,000+ steps a day and go straight from sightseeing to dinner, so you need one outfit that does both.

  • Wear: tan Harrington, cream waffle knit, pleated trousers.

  • Shoes: suede loafers with rubber soles. They're comfortable enough for the walking and dressy enough for dinner.

  • Pack: a printed neckerchief, which dresses up the same outfit at night without packing another jacket.

European city break (Paris, London, Rome in October or November)

People in European cities dress a step up from a typical American weekend, and late fall in Paris and London is often gray and wet.

  • Wear: a barn jacket or a waxed jacket that handles rain, Fair Isle or cashmere knits, and pleated trousers in brown or olive.

  • Leave at home: most of the graphic tees and baggy jeans.

  • Shoes: loafers for dinner and Chelsea boots for the rain.

Cozy cabin or mountain weekend (Catskills, Stowe, the Poconos)

This is the weekend for the comfortable pieces.

  • Wear: flannel workshirt, waffle knit, workwear pants.

  • Shoes: Sperry duck boots outside and suede clogs inside.

  • Pack: your plaid zip jacket for dinner in town.

December Christmas markets (Quebec City, Montreal)

The one exception: this wardrobe is not warm enough on its own. December temperatures in Quebec City regularly drop well below freezing.

  • Under: the cashmere, flannel and cord pieces still work as layers.

  • Over: you need a real insulated parka, plus a hat, gloves and boots made for snow.

  • Skip: the Harrington, and don't wear suede in the slush.

What I pack for a fall trip

Here's one short list that covers any of the trips above. Every piece mixes with the others, so it gets me through a long weekend or a week away.

Neatly packed suitcase with folded clothes, loafers, sneakers, beanie and belt on a rug; Ford graphic tee visible.

  1. Tan Harrington (wear it on the plane)

  2. Plaid workshirt (doubles as a light jacket)

  3. Cream waffle knit

  4. Coffee cashmere crew

  5. Two heavyweight tees, one plain and one graphic

  6. Olive pleated trousers

  7. Dark baggy jeans

  8. Suede loafers

  9. Cream sneakers

  10. A beanie and a brown belt

That's enough for a fall foliage weekend in the Hudson Valley or Vermont, or a week in a city like Paris. For a full Paris version, see my fall in Paris packing list.

Men's fall wardrobe FAQ

What colors should men wear in fall?

Brown, tan, olive and cream are the easiest base, with denim as a neutral. Add one accent color, like deep red, so it doesn't all blend together.

What are the essential fall jackets for men?

If you're starting from scratch: a tan Harrington, a barn or chore jacket with a cord collar, and a denim jacket. Add a corduroy or plaid jacket as your fourth.

How many pieces do you need for a fall capsule wardrobe?

Around 20 to 25 pieces covers a full season if everything shares a color palette. For travel, about 10 items is enough for a week.

Are baggy pants still in style for men?

Yes. Relaxed, pleated and baggy fits are the main silhouette for fall 2026. Pair them with a cropped jacket like a Harrington so the proportions stay balanced.
