Planning a trip to the Hudson Valley? Don’t skip the legendary Storm King Art Center—a 500-acre outdoor museum that merges nature and large-scale sculpture into a one-of-a-kind, awe-inspiring experience. Located just an hour north of New York City in New Windsor, NY, Storm King is the perfect anchor for a peaceful, art-filled day trip or even a full upstate New York weekend getaway. With wide open fields, curated exhibitions, and permanent works by over 150 artists, this open-air gallery is unlike any traditional museum you’ve visited before.
Whether you're looking to slow down and soak in nature or explore something visually and culturally enriching, Storm King offers a unique blend of creativity and serenity. As you wander through rolling hills and meadows, sculptures by Maya Lin, Alexander Calder, and Richard Serra loom against a backdrop of forest, sky, and mountain views. The layout allows for endless perspectives—each piece is thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, making every walk through feel like your own curated adventure.
What to Know Before You Go
Before you head out, it’s important to plan accordingly. Storm King Art Center is open from April through early December, rain or shine. Hours vary by day—open from 10AM–6PM on most weekdays and Sundays, and extended to 8PM on Saturdays. It’s closed Tuesdays, and the last admission is one hour before closing.
Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, and $15 for youth and students (with valid ID). Children under 4 enter for free, and members enjoy year-round access. Advance tickets are highly recommended, especially for weekends and peak seasons like fall foliage. Onsite parking is available, and public transit options include Metro-North and a shuttle from Beacon Station on weekends.
Amenities Onsite
Storm King offers several amenities to elevate your visit. The Outdoor Café is open daily from 10AM–4PM and serves sandwiches, salads, drinks, and a made-to-order menu Friday through Sunday, courtesy of Kitchen Sink from Beacon. There's also a Museum Store where you can browse gifts, art books, toys, and home goods, with a 10% discount for members.
Want to see more of the grounds in less time? Rent a bike on-site! Storm King offers bike rentals from 10AM to 4PM (all bikes must be returned by 6PM). Personal bikes are not allowed, but helmets are required, and rentals are suitable for guests between 4’7” and 6’2”.
What Makes Storm King a Must-Visit Hudson Valley Sculpture Park
Unlike any museum confined to four walls, Storm King immerses you in the natural world while inviting thoughtful interaction with some of the most iconic sculptures of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Hudson Valley landscape becomes part of the art—whether you’re standing beneath a steel structure or viewing it from a hill across the field. You’ll want to stop, sit, photograph, and reflect often.
Signature installations include Maya Lin’s “Wavefield,” where the land itself rises and falls like the ocean, and Tripod, a massive, gravity-defying piece that draws you in from every angle. Whether you walk or bike the paths, there’s something profoundly meditative about watching art change with the light and wind, surrounded by birdsong and mountains.
Things to Do in Cornwall NY After Your Visit
Storm King is just the beginning—extend your trip with stops in the charming towns of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson. These neighboring villages are full of eclectic shops, cozy cafés, and scenic landmarks.
Breakfast or Lunch at Jones Farm
Start (or continue) your day with a meal at Jones Farm, a beloved local spot open Wednesday through Sunday. Enjoy avocado toast, pancakes, or hearty breakfast sandwiches in a rustic setting. Don’t miss the farm market, stocked with seasonal produce, and Clearwater Gifts, their artisan-filled gift shop. Kids (and adults!) will love the mini horses, goats, ducks, and chickens on-site.
Snap a Photo at Moodna Viaduct
Just minutes away, you’ll find the Moodna Viaduct, one of the longest railroad trestles east of the Mississippi. Park near the trailhead for a short hike under the ironwork, or lay out a blanket and take in the view. It’s a favorite for photographers and even inspired local musicians like Gus Dapperton.
Coffee Break at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge
Before your next adventure, grab a specialty coffee or wine at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge. This artsy café is a perfect pit stop with a cozy vibe and a great selection of drinks—both hot and cold.
Hike at Black Rock Forest
If you’re up for one last outdoor activity, Black Rock Forest offers 3,920 acres of wilderness just a few miles from Storm King. With over 27 trails, there’s something for every level. A great intro hike is the 1.8-mile out-and-back to the Upper Reservoir, which features peaceful forest views and light elevation gain.
Dinner at Twins Eating House
Wrap up your day at Twins Eating House, a local favorite that serves American classics all day long. Veteran-owned and family-friendly, their menu ranges from burgers and wraps to house-made desserts.
