Sage Lodge
Pray, Montana
The most comfortable base near Yellowstone's north side, and one of the few good picks in winter.
You want comfort and a spa near the north entrance, especially in winter
You want to wake up next to the geysers
A newer lodge in Montana's Paradise Valley with big mountain views, a spa, and activities from fly fishing and stargazing to cross-country skiing. It's about 35 minutes north of the park, and the lodge runs its own Yellowstone tours, including in winter.
I recommend it for couples and families who want real hotel comfort between Lamar Valley days, especially in winter when the north road is the only one open to cars. The trade-off: Old Faithful is well over two hours away, so in summer I pair it with a night or two inside the park.
