Walt Disney World Travel Guide

Walt Disney World is four theme parks, two water parks and Disney Springs spread over a property the size of a small city. It rewards planning more than any trip I book. Get the timing, hotel and Lightning Lane strategy right and it's a great week. Wing it and you'll spend it in lines.

Where to stay

For Magic Kingdom, the monorail deluxes (Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Contemporary) save the most time. For EPCOT, Beach Club or BoardWalk. Four Seasons Orlando and the Swan Reserve also get Early Theme Park Entry.

Best months

The weekdays before Thanksgiving and the first two weeks of December have the best mix of crowds and weather. Avoid Columbus Day week, Thanksgiving week and Christmas through New Year's. August to October is hot and hurricane season.

Budget

1-day tickets run $119 to $229 per adult; multi-day drops the daily cost. Pop Century is about $213 to $404 a night, Grand Floridian $832 and up. Lightning Lane Multi Pass adds about $15 to $35 per person per day.

Heads-up

Construction is the 2026 story. DinoLand is gone for Tropical Americas (opening 2027). Monstropolis replaces the Muppets area at Hollywood Studios, with parts opening 2027. Rivers of America is closed for a Cars land, and Carousel of Progress is down until spring 2027.

Caribbean

Punta Cana, Turks and Caicos and Puerto Rico, all-inclusive and not.

Know before you go

Getting there

Fly into Orlando (MCO); Disney resorts are 25-35 minutes away. Mears Connect runs shared and private shuttles, Lyft and Uber work well, and Minnie Vans are available for Deluxe resort and Club Level guests. Orlando Sanford (SFB) is farther and handles mostly budget and charter flights.

Getting around

Staying on property, I'd skip the car and use Disney's buses, monorail, boats and Skyliner. Off property, you'll pay theme park parking (about $35 a day for standard), and a car makes sense if you're adding Universal or the beaches.

Money and tipping

Budget for Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass, priced per day and higher in peak weeks. Cards and Apple Pay work everywhere, and I suggest buying discounted Disney gift cards ahead to pre-pay food and extras.

Day 2  Magic Kingdom, rope drop and fireworks

Where to eat in Walt Disney World

Columbia Harbour House

Seafood and chicken · Magic Kingdom (Liberty Square) · $

My go-to Magic Kingdom lunch. Head upstairs for quiet seating that most people miss.

Sunshine Seasons

Global quick service · EPCOT (The Land) · $

Lighter food than most park counters, with grilled fish and salads. It sits right by Soarin' and Behind the Seeds.

Satu'li Canteen

Build-your-own bowls · Animal Kingdom (Pandora) · $

Quick service that tastes like table service. Use mobile order in the app and eat before or after Flight of Passage.

Topolino's Terrace

Character breakfast · Riviera Resort · $$$

The best character breakfast on property. $59 adults, $39 kids as of October 2026. Take the Skyliner over, and get there before the parks open.

Boma - Flavors of Africa

African-inspired buffet · Animal Kingdom Lodge · $$$

The buffet I recommend most, especially for picky and adventurous eaters at the same table. Walk out back to see the animals after.

Jiko - The Cooking Place

African-inspired · Animal Kingdom Lodge · $$$$

My pick for a quieter splurge dinner, with a deep South African wine list. Usually easier to book than California Grill.

California Grill

Californian, sushi · Contemporary Resort · $$$$

Three-course prix fixe at $99 per adult, on the 15th floor. Book about an hour before Magic Kingdom fireworks so you're done in time to watch from the deck.

Victoria & Albert's

Contemporary tasting menu · Grand Floridian Resort · $$$$

The best restaurant in Orlando. The tasting menu is $375 per person, plus $210 for the wine pairing, and it's ages 10 and up. Book the morning your 60-day window opens.

Walt Disney World FAQ

How many days do I need at Disney World?

Four park days covers the four parks at a reasonable pace. Five or six lets you repeat Magic Kingdom, add a water park or take a pool day, which I recommend with young kids.

Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it?

On busy days, yes. It runs about $15 to $35 per person per day. Disney hotel guests can book 7 days before their stay, everyone else 3 days before each park day.

What is Lightning Lane Premier Pass?

It's one-time Lightning Lane entry to nearly every ride in a park, with no reservations. It's pricey, from around $119 at Animal Kingdom to a cap of $499 at peak times. It only makes sense for a short, high-stakes trip.

Do I still need theme park reservations?

Not with a regular date-based ticket. Annual passholders may still need them on some dates.

When can I book dining reservations?

60 days out at 6 a.m. Eastern. If you stay at a Disney hotel, you can book your whole stay (up to 10 days) on day 60 before check-in. That's a real edge for Cinderella's Royal Table and Victoria & Albert's.

Is it worth staying at a Disney hotel?

Often, yes, for the transportation and the earlier Lightning Lane window. Early Theme Park Entry (30 minutes) is also open to Four Seasons Orlando, the Swan and Dolphin, and several Disney Springs-area hotels, so off-site can work too.

What's closed right now?

DinoLand and the Muppets area are gone for construction, and Rivers of America is closed for a Cars land. Carousel of Progress is down until spring 2027. Typhoon Lagoon is in its annual refurb through October, but Blizzard Beach is open.

What's new for 2026?

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets opened May 26, 2026, and The Magic of Disney Animation reopened as a character and drawing space on September 14. Disney Lakeshore Lodge opens on Bay Lake in summer 2027.
