The Carlyle is the Upper East Side hotel New Yorkers still treat like a private club: polished service, a quiet residential corner of Madison Avenue at 76th Street, and rooms that feel like a well-kept apartment. Bemelmans Bar, with live piano and its hand-painted murals, and the cabaret at Café Carlyle are the evening draws, and Dowling's is a proper New York dining room.
I recommend it to couples and repeat visitors who want calm, museums and Central Park over Times Square energy. The trade-off is theater nights, since Broadway is a 15 to 20 minute cab ride, and entry-level rooms are on the small side for about $1,100 to $2,000 a night.
