A stylish, central boutique hotel that's often better value than Lenox in summer.

A 45-room boutique hotel in two restored historic buildings on Pittsfield's main street, with exposed brick, original details and a cocktail bar inside a vintage birdcage elevator. Every room is laid out a little differently.

I recommend it for travelers who want a central base between the north and south Berkshires, or a better rate on busy summer weekends. The trade-off: Pittsfield is a working small city rather than a pretty village, and you'll drive to most sights.

The stay, in detail

Rooms

Rooms mix exposed brick, tall windows and modern bathrooms, and no two are the same. Ask for a larger room if you're staying more than two nights.

Pools and beach

There's no pool or spa, so this is a place to sleep well and head out.

Dining

RARE 297, a steakhouse with a raw bar, is in the same building, and the hotel bar does cocktails.
