A 47-room inn made from six restored Victorian row houses that once housed mill workers, with a playful, artsy feel inside. The outdoor pool is heated and the hot tub runs into the evening, even in winter.

I recommend it for art lovers and anyone spending a day at MASS MoCA and the Clark, since you can walk to one and drive 15 minutes to the other. The trade-off: North Adams is a small former mill city, not a postcard village, and you're 45 minutes from Lenox and Tanglewood.

The stay, in detail

Rooms

Rooms are bright and colorful, and 21 of the 47 are suites. The long-stay suites have fireplaces and laundry.

Pools and beach

The heated outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna sit behind the row houses and stay open late.

Dining

There's no full restaurant, just breakfast and a small bar, so plan dinners in North Adams or Williamstown.
