The calm, grown-up way to stay in Times Square: walk to every theater, then retreat upstairs.

The Knickerbocker sits on the corner of 42nd and Broadway in a landmark 1906 building, but once you're inside it feels quiet and residential, with 12 foot ceilings and big windows. St. Cloud, the rooftop bar, looks straight down on Times Square, and Charlie Palmer Steak IV handles dinner.

I recommend it for theater-heavy trips and first visits where location saves time, usually at about $450 to $800 a night. The trade-off is the neighborhood: Times Square is crowded and loud at street level, and you'll take the subway or a cab for the best dinners.
