The Ritz-Carlton sits on Central Park South with 259 rooms and suites, many looking straight over the park. There's a La Prairie spa, Contour for coffee, cocktails and light plates all day, and the Ritz Kids program for families.

This is the hotel I recommend most for families and holiday trips, since the park, the Central Park Zoo and the Fifth Avenue windows are all walking distance. The trade-off is cost, about $1,000 to $1,800 a night: park view rooms are where the value is, and city view rooms are hard to justify at these rates.
